I should mention that as we buried my genet, I received an upsetting text message from my resource family- Mama had been in an accident, and was in the hospital! I immediately called Peace Corps and asked permission to go see her, despite the fact that I had pretty much just returned from Nyanza. Peace Corps readily gave me the okay, understanding that my resource family was important to me.
Early the next morning I headed back to the bus station and tried to get a ticket, but learned that because this was the week of remembrance, an important Rwandan holiday, tickets would not be sold until after 2 PM. I wasn’t going to be able to go visit Jacky, because I would not be able to get back in time to get to In-Service Training in a couple of days. I sent them an apology message, explaining that I no longer was going to be able to come, and wished Jacky a speedy recovery as I walked sadly back to Kagogo.
